Just as the name implies, cyclists will be put to the challenge as they ride over some of the highest and most scenic roads in the East Bay. The cruelty of Cruella lies not in any one climb, but in the sum of all its parts - no climb alone is too great of challenge, but the timing and combination of the climbs unfailingly loads up in the legs, culminating with the final climb to the ‘Double Junction’ that bites through the muscle down to the bone.

Open to men and women, The Cruella Challenge offers plenty of climbing including Mt. Diablo, Pig Farm, the 3 Bears, Wildcat Canyon, Skyline and Pinehurst totaling approximately 4,000 ft of elevation gain for the Metric Century (62 miles) and approximately 9,000+ ft for the Full Century (100 miles)!

For Full Century riders, the ultimate challenge is to tackle the Double Junction a second trip up to the Junction of Mt. Diablo at mile 90. Once again, century riders who conquer the Double Junction will receive a special, commemorative souvenir as a symbol of their achievement.

All riders are rewarded with a well deserved Outback Steakhouse BBQ at the finish!

route description route descriptionAs the sun rises on Saturday, October 22, you will roll out of Oak Hill Park in Danville, and head toward the south gate of Mt. Diablo. Your climbing legs will warm up quickly on this first 10 mile section up to the Junction, the highest point of the ride. As your legs and lungs open up, make sure you take in the views of the valley and the hills you will soon be climbing off to the north and west. Enjoy a fast decent down the north side of the mountain and a generous stretch of flat road before reaching your next challenge: Pig Farm and the Three Bears. This section of the ride is along beautiful backcountry roads with little traffic and plenty of short climbs. Mile 40 is your crossroad - you will either turn toward Moraga and continue on the Metric Century route or beg for more climbing and take the road less traveled - the Full Century route up Wildcat Canyon to Grizzly Peak and Skyline Roads. If the climbing doesnt take your breath away, the expansive views of the San Francisco Bay Area sure will. Be sure to glance off to the east and soak in that view of Mt. Diablo, keeping in mind that you will be climbing back up that mountain at the end of the day. There is a brief reprieve as you descend Redwood Rd. into the cool canyon before climbing yet again up over Pinehurst into Moraga, where both routes re-join and head back to Danville. If attempting the Full Century, your ultimate challenge is to tackle the Double Junction - a second trip up to the Junction of Mt. Diablo. As you descend the south side of the mountain, bask in the glory of your accomplishment. You're on the final stretch to the finish for your well-deserved Outback Steakhouse BBQ!Congratulations!
